The Addams Family is a cartoon family of fictional characters created by the American cartoonist Charles Addams created and published in The New Yorker magazine from 1938 until the cartoonist’s death in 1988. Over the years, the family has been portrayed in various media – including TV series, movies, video games, and quite recently, in theater.
The Addams Family is comprised of eccentric, wealthy, and often far-from-natural members who delight in macabre interests but are not really evil. The core group is comprised of Gomez (the patriarch), Morticia (the matriarch), Wednesday (their daughter), and Pugsley (their son); later versions also include Pubert, the third child, whose name was supposed to be used instead of “Pugsley” but was not used in fear that the show censors would not allow it.
Gomez is often portrayed as a handsome, charming, and successful business man who “plays” with the stock market – aiming to lose, that is; he is madly in love with his wife. Morticia is often portrayed as a Gothic woman in a skin-tight black gown and pale skin. The children are often portrayed as siblings who delight in trying to harm or even kill each other – but this is considered as natural and fun in the family.
Broadway is currently working on a stage musical for The Addams Family which features two-time Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth as the couple. It is scheduled to debut on March 3, 2010 (previews) and official open on April 8, 2010.
