About US-Open-Tennis-Championship
US Open Tennis Championship

The US Open Tennis Championships is often called as the “US Open”. It is a Grand Slam Tournament that differs from the three others as final-set tiebreaks are done whereas the games continue in the three other – Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon – until someone wins by two games.

The US Open started as the United States National Championship in 1881 – the competition was held only for singles, men. It started exclusively for clubs belonging to the United States Lawn Tennis Association and followed a challenge system where the year’s champion automatically becomes a defending champion the following year.

The U.S. Women’s National Singles Championship games were played in 1887 – with doubles played two years after; mixed doubles were played along with the women’s singles and doubles while men’s doubles were played in 1900.

All these 5 events were merged into one tournament – the US Open, beginning in 1968. The tournaments were first played on grass until the hard court surfaces prevailed. Beginning in 2006, instant reviews could be made of various calls – with an accuracy of up to 99.2%. This opened a system where the players could challenge a call up to a certain limit per set. In 2008, three challenges could be done per set while an extra challenge in case of tiebreaks.
